Open Hearth Cooking

February 11, 2012: Open Hearth Cooking at Fort Jesup State Historic Site, 10:00am - 3:00pm: Guests are invited to experience the original historic kitchen at Fort Jesup SHS in action. A costumed interpreter will demonstrate cooking techniques and equipment used in a frontier kitchen as well as give a talk on how the kitchen would have been used when it was a military mess hall. Bald Eagle’s Nest Hike

Experience the Bald Eagle’s Nest Hike at South Toledo Bend State Park every Saturday in February starting at 8am. Guests will be able to learn about the majestic bald eagle and see one in its natural habitat. Also, learn about local animal and plant life at the park’s Visitor Center, with exhibits designed to increase awareness of these species and their role in the environment. Fort Jesup State Historic Site will be hosting the event “Arms and Armaments” on Saturday, January 7 from 10am to 3pm. Ongoing Drought Conditions Affect Toledo Bend Operations

(Toledo Bend Reservoir) The ongoing drought conditions have taken a toll on water resources in the States of Louisiana and Texas. Drought conditions have affected operations at the Toledo Bend Reservoir operated jointly by the Sabine River Authority, State of Louisiana and the Sabine River Authority of Texas (Authorities).

Toledo Bend is Still in Business

“We still have 136,000 acres of water available on Toledo Bend Lake,” said Tourism Director Linda Curtis-Sparks. “If you are planning to come for a summer getaway, still come,” she added. The fishing is good. The Lunker Bass Program sponsored by Toledo Bend Lake Association had three lunkers caught for the month of June ranging from 10.18 lbs. to 11.04 lbs. All 35 guide services on Toledo Bend report good fishing for bass and crappie, and there are lots of other things for the family to experience.

State Parks hours changed amid budget cuts

Budget cuts and reduced staffing have forced a change in operating hours at Louisiana state parks. The Office of State Parks says entrance station hours will be 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday – and 8:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Gate will continue to open at 6:00 a.m. at sites with boat launches and 7:00 a.m. at sites without boat launches. Late-arriving guests are advised to contact the park prior to their visit to make check-in arrangements.
