Negreet was founded in 1822. Had it not been for the lawless area known as the Neutral Strip, Negreet may have been founded much earlier.

After the cantonment of Ft Jesup was built, the area was much safer for settlers and their families.

Before the Civil War, many farms and plantations abounded. The Civil War left the area rampaged and in shambles, forcing many Negreet residents to go south.
